LEWIS Web Developer, Gareth Roberts, explains more about Really Simple Syndication (RSS): If you regularly use the internet to stay up-to-date with news, stories, events or blogs you are bound to have seen the RSS icon. The icon indicates an RSS Feed which, in essence, is a web page designed to be read by computers automatically.
The advantage of this is you can use a piece of software called an RSS Feed Reader to continually check a website for new content without having to physically visit the website. Imagine if you have 10 websites to check regularly. The RSS Feed Reader would check all these websites on your behalf and show all their new content. This would save you the time and energy instead of personally trawling each of the sites.
Today RSS is so common that any website worth its salt has an RSS feed. Subscribing to these feeds is simplicity itself, in fact, the latest version of any web browser (Internet explorer 7.0, Firefox 2+, Opera and Safari) all have inbuilt RSS Feed Readers as standard.
